I have the pill, but i'm unsure when to take it.
Can you start it at anytime? or does it have to be during your period?
I pretty much just finished my last period, so does this mean I have to wait until my next one to start?
I was planning to have relations this weekend, and if I start my pill now would it still be effective?
Thanks for your help.

No, the pill will not be effective by the weekend. It takes at least a week to become effective, and a month to become fully effective.

In order to not confuse your cycle, you need to start the pill either the day you begin a period, or a few days after ending a period. If you begin taking it randomly, it will take longer for it to become effective; plus you'll confuse your body and likely bleed randomly for the entire month.

Oh dear your prescribing physician appears to have failed totally in his duty to advise you how your pill works and when to start it, though I do think most of the advice is included on the insert included in every pack!

Ideally you start your pill on the first day of your period, if you do this it is effective immediately giving 99.8% protection during both your 21 pill days and your 7 pill free days. If however you start it later in your cycle, you need to take it for 7 days before it can be relied upon to give full contraceptive cover.
