When you lie on your back, the blood that does not immediately get absorbed by the pad has to go somewhere.... so it leaks out the back. If you are unable to get to the store to buy extra long pads, try using two, overlapping them in the middle.

OK there are special night ones that absorb more, and special long ones that are longer, wearing two is an option as well, or a tampon and a pad.
If you think you have abnormally heavy flow, it might be worth seeing your doctor about.
In terms of reducing mess, I also wear three pairs of old underwear so that if it leaks, it only goes on the old underwear instead of onto my pyjamas or sheets. Then I can simply put the underwear to soak in the morning. Putting a towel on the bed underneath can help as well.

Everyone has covered the pad side of this question pretty thoroughly.
Here's a tip on the blood stain on your sheets....
Add a 1/2 cup of table salt + half cup of Napisan (or similar washing powder) to your washing machine as it is filling with water.
Let the water mix with this before putting your sheets and other garments into the wash.
The salt shrinks the blood cells and the Napisan helps remove any left over staining.
When you wash with plain water the blood cells actually swell and burst (it's to do with the cell membrane) and this causes the staining which is really difficult to remove.
Undergarments can be soaked in a bucket pre-filled with water + salt + Napisan.
Works every time.

You can't really stop this problem. It happens to loads of people all the time. You can get bigger pads or put two on further back so you don't leak. You could always use a tampon which isn't the most hygienic thing to do but will do the job. Good luck and don't worry it happens to everyone :).

I had that problem too, when you go to sleep , buy the SUPER pads, and use those for nights, the first few days are when the period is the heaviest, as for your sheets, dont let the stain set in too long, put them in the wash!

Been there done that. so what I used to do was use 14+ pads even though I am smaller than that and it worked. have you tried using a tampon? This got to be a major problem with me so I talked with my doctor and he recommended birth control. also the pad u a re using may not work for overnight problems. so try overnight and see what happens. good luck

Well, it seems that there are many answers already.
I'm not aiming for the best asnwer, just giving you a tip.
i used to have these problems too. My mum bought me a type of underwear that prevents the blood to seep through the underwear. It has a layer of some sort of material on the inside. Try and look for them. :)

If you feel you are seasoning too much, you need to see a Doctor, preferably a Gynaecologist. But if, as I assume, you are a small girl below 20, it is natural. All you need to get a good brand of napkins. You can also try tampons. As they arrest blood pre-discharge, they are more comfortable and reduce period by a day.

you should definitly get longer pads for sleeping but when that doesnt work... my best friend told me to wrap a scrap or non important towel around yourself so it doesnt get on your bed. it just gets on the towel and you can have like a "period" towel and use the same towel everytime so you only ruin 1 towel. oh and a little tip use a red towel so when you wash it it doesnt matter if the stains come out!
hope this works for you like it worked for me!

I have this problem sometimes. Try positioning the pad just right or try using Always Ultra Night. They're good and they're longer too :)

when i am on my period i get the same thing. all you need to do is either buy the extra long pads or wear two so you fully protected. i have to wear two overnights to bed to prevent "spills".

it slips at night. get one that says "long". will cover a wider area front to back, so it can't slip. also try sleeping in "granny drawers". bigger undies are less likely to slip as much.
