In Canada it's called Depo-Provera. It's medroxyprogesterone acetate, similar to progesterone a horomone produced by the ovaries every month. The shot lasts for three months. So the first injection is given within 5 days after the beginning of your period then repeated every 3 months. It's usually injected into your bum or into your upper arm. It's fairly expensive, if you have drug insurance then that helps a lot. Side effects are just like most birth controls, spotting/bleeding, irregular periods etc.

It used to be called Norplant, but they pulled that manufacturer off the market and it has been replaced with another improved type by a different company...the new one is called Inplanon and you can get it at Planned Parenthood.

Depo-Provera is an "injection" not an "implant" Two different things.

Norplant sorry that's all I can tell you. Why not get the patch that lasts for 3 months?
